Powerbook 100 won't boot up

Hello, I recently bought a macintosh powerbook 100 from gumtree.

The seller sold it as not working but suspected that the power supply was to blame.

The laptop appears to be in good condition and came with original case and manuals and floppy discs so hopefully has been looked after.

I bought a new power supply, same voltage and amp rating, centre positive barrel connector, and ... it doesn't work.

It doesn't do nothing though. The screen backlight comes on and the pixels are all black, and it plays the welcome tune! But then nothing.

I also replaced the three cell batteries in the back.

Can anyone here shed some light on this for me? Are there common faults I should know about before getting my screwdrivers and multimeter out?

One other thing, when powered off the screen and speaker continue to flicker and crackle, this stops when I open the cell battery compartment.

Thanks for any advice!

caps , caps , caps.  The powerbook 100 needs new motherboard caps, and probably screen caps also.  Do a web search, many videos on this mac and its repair.
