iBook G3 (white) with blinking question mark. no hard drive?

it means no OS detected but how to check in openfirmware (without opening machine and without booting from CD) if hard drive is not removed?

If there's a HD installed you should be able to hear it running if you put your ear to the left of the trackpad.  None of the HDs that got installed in the iceBooks were quiet to the point that you couldn't hear them spin up when the machine powered on.

what if it is CF card in ATA adaptor? or faulty hard drive? I won't hear a thing.

If it's a faulty HD you'd have to crack the case to remove it anyhow and the likelihood of it being a poor man's SSD is slim.  If you don't have a bootable OS9 CD handy there should be one on Macintosh Garden.
