iBook G3 dual USB dead ?

Couple of years ago I bought an iBook G3 to play with classic Mac OS and it has been working fine until today (i used it from time to time, say once every couple of months).
Today, randomly, after few minutes of use the screen goes black (but I still can see the last image on the LCD display with a strong light) and it freezes.
It is not off, I need to press the power button to actually shut it off (I can hear the hard disk parking); it has always emitted some noises like buzzes, high pitched whistle, ... but today they are even stronger.
Is the logic board dead ? should I find a "new" one ?

thanks
bye

Re: iBook G3 dual USB dead ?

The dual USB iBooks / iceBooks had a design defect where the video card would desolder itself from the motherboard (see archived link below).  You could reflow the solder if you're handy with a heat gun, but given how cheap and plentiful iceBooks are if you really wanted another one you could pick up a working machine for under $35.  That would also save you the horror of having to take apart the machine.  Lots of tiny screws and parts that clip together.

Re: iBook G3 dual USB dead ?

Thanks,

that looks exactly like my issue and I too was suspecting a problem with the video card; I was aware of the logic board issues of the iBookG3 but other forums said that if it is working up to these days, very likely the board has already been replaced. I guess it is not my case.
I have already taken apart the iBook to upgrade the HDD, it takes some patience but with the iFixit guide is not that difficult. Anyway I do not have an heat gun and I have already eyed a couple of offers for working iBooks; I think i will mix and match the two to avoid the real hassle (to me) of having to reinstall everything from the USB 1.1 port. The iBook has also a problem with the speakers (they do not work) which also appears to be a common problem due to their tiny dimensions; but it is equipped with the airport card, the combo drive and the battery is rather new (less than 100 cycles) so it won't be a waste.

Re: iBook G3 dual USB dead ?

I have tried the temporary solution suggested in this thread and indeed it appears to work.
A thin shim of 1,5mm is pushing the gpu thus ensuring contact; not sure how long it will last, but as of now it has been working ok for longer than few minutes.
