Getting Colour on Apple II Europlus

Was having a conversation with some work colleagues this afternoon. We wanted to somehow get colour on my Apple II Europlus to play some old games. This machine lacks the PAL Encoder Card needed to produce colour graphics, and they don't seem to be the easiest cards to find.

So I suggested that perhaps it would be easier to find an NTSC display.

From what I understand most newer displays connect without issue to either PAL or NTSC inputs, but some conversion must be going on, because the display still doesn't have any colour output. That said, it does have a picture, so that's something.

The question is what kind of display would I need to produce colour graphics with an Apple II? Does it specifically need to be NTSC, or is it doable with a dual NTSC / PAL compatible? Does it need to specifically be CRT or could an LCD panel also in theory handle it?

Of course, a dedicated card would be better, and while I could build my own from schematics, I somehow think that runs beyond what I can do at this point in time.

Re: Getting Colour on Apple II Europlus

An LCD might handle it, but the Apple ][ generates colour with NTSC artifacting, so it's probably not going to look quite right unless the LCD's firmware is designed to emulate the effect. Also, this article -- … color.html -- implies that colour output is still poorer on a PAL display even with the PAL adapter card.

Re: Getting Colour on Apple II Europlus

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure a Europlus won't display color if you hook it up to an NTSC TV; it specifically outputs a monochrome PAL signal and, while I'd have to check a schematic to be sure I suspect the circuitry to output the NTSC colorburst signal has been disabled...

Yeah, here's a thread over on Applefritter describing the changes from a standard II+. To get NTSC with color out of it you have hack on the motherboard a little (hack some traces one place, solder some jumpers another) and change a crystal.

Flap Different.
