Re: Compact Mac Power Meter Tool :)

Nice, where did you get the meters?  I've been having some problems with powering the raspberry pi's that drive my TV network, and being able to monitor the voltage like that would be helpful.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Firm-0-30V- … 43ce47b4e8

these are 1.27 each and you can choose colors.

when i bought the 10 pack of these, they were all green and 99 cents free shipping.

I originally bought these to connect up to all my radios, (ham) equipment.
- So i could see the drop when i key up.

Re: Compact Mac Power Meter Tool :)

Awesome, thanks!  I noticed the different colors have different minimum input voltages.  Red = 4.5, Blue = 5.0, Yellow = 2.7.
I've noticed my raspberry pi's like >5.0V, closer to 5.5V.  And you can get 0.5V drop across a USB cable & connector.  I was using an ATX PSU to power the bank of rpi's, but it seems like ATX PSU's typically err on the side of lower voltage, say 4.8-4.9V on the 5V rail rather than exceeding 5V.  Couple that with a drop in the conversion from Molex connector to mini-USB, and it can drop low enough to cause issues.

I guess now I need to make up some kind of mounting solution for 12 of these across a 19" rack width!

Re: Compact Mac Power Meter Tool :)

OT: bbraun: have you ever written up how you get the rpi's to show on different channels?

Re: Compact Mac Power Meter Tool :)

markyb: You need an RF Modulator or agile modulator to convert the composite out to the the TV channel.  I have an older writeup here but it's in desperate need of updating.  In that page I was still using cabletronix CT-ARM units for the RF conversion.  Those units are fine, although they only handle between 1 and 4 inputs depending on the model.  They can often be found cheap on ebay as surplus from an older closed-circuit security camera system or similar.  I've found they typically need recapping too.  Last year I ended up upgrading to some more professional gear.  This stuff is great, highly recommended, and can occasionally be found cheap on ebay as hotels or other places surplus out their old analog gear.  That's why I'm wanting 12 of these volt meters in a rack mount solution, since there's 12 modulators in a 4U chassis.
